Elementary School Soledad Rivas

In 1991, the school was established by the educator Soledad Rivas vda. De Mercado. The school now has 364 pupils and 18 teaching staff. The school grows in size each year and is situated in the area of Cercado, Vinto, with around 700 inhabitants.

The people live from the earnings from basket weaving, agriculture and livestock. The apples from Cercado are well-known and each year there is an apple market in Vinto. Once a year there is a basket market in Cercado. The economic situation of most families is unstable, with no stable income. The average income is 450-500 Bolivianos, which is around 50 Euros (based on the exchange rate of 1 Euro to 50 Bolivianos).

The primary school system in Bolivia is divided according to the following levels:
Nivel inicial (grade 1 and 2)
Primer Ciclo (grade 3, 4 and 5)
Segundo Ciclo (grade 6, 7 and 8)
Tercer Ciclo (High School grade 1 and 2)

Following this, the pupils can attend secondary school, which takes four years. The football team
Vrij Links supported the Soledad Rivas school between 1996 and 2000, along with SNKP – Bolivia. The support is based on a principle of co-operation. The teaching staff at Soledad Rivas collected money through school fundraisers for the acquisition of teaching materials. The remaining funds needed were covered by their partners in the Netherlands. This co-operation now has a structural form and involves an exchange with the primary school de Rolpaal in the town of Blokzijl. Both schools are making use of the same methodology for language acquisition. In 2003, SNKP – Bolivia donated computers to Soledad Rivas, with which the school set up a computer lab. In 2005, the school informed us that the computer lesson is the class the students most look forward to.
